Forio, Isola d’Ischia. Attraverso la figura di Salvatore Mattera, contadino locale amato dalla gente e soprannominato Malvisiello, ideatore negli anni Ottanta di una festa dedicata alla martire siracusana Lucia — in cui la fede si intrecciava con il sogno di aggregazione e di abbattimento delle barriere sociali — il film racconta le pratiche di sopravvivenza dell’antica cultura contadina che, insieme a quella dei pescatori, rappresentava certamente il cuore pulsante dell’identità locale. Ne risulta un ritratto poetico e appassionato di un mondo antico, ancora capace di sopravvivere attraverso il baratto e profondamente legato ai ritmi della natura.

Forio, Ischia Island. Through the figure of Salvatore Mattera, a local farmer loved by the people and nicknamed Malvisiello, creator in the 1980s of a festival dedicated to the Syracusan martyr Lucia, in which faith was intertwined with the dream of aggregation and the breaking down of social barriers, the film describes the survival practices of the ancient rural culture, which, together with that of the fishermen, certainly represented the beating heart of the local identity. The result is a poetic and passionate portrait of an ancient world, still capable of surviving through barter and strongly linked to natural rhythms.
